We had the pleasure of taking a Food & Wine tour with Taste Hungary and I know I was really excited- the Hungarian food we’d tried so far was incredible & we wanted more!
Our first stop was the Central Market, which we’d been to before but loved visiting it again. Today’s visit had us gleefully stuffing our faces with Lángos, a deep fried flat bread topped with cheese and sour cream. How could this not be heaven?
We also tried some local cheeses & cured meat- including a new one for me- horse. Our guide Virag made sure I had plenty of cheesy goodness and I loved her for it. Oh and horse meat? Not too shabby.

We drove to Etyek for lunch- an up and coming wine region about 45 minutes from Budapest which produces good sparkling wine, white wine & pinot noir. Lunch was at the Rókusfalvy Restaurant which also has a winery- and we indulged in a little wine tasting with our meal.
Creative food and good wine- the outstanding dish of the day was the deer stew & potato dumplings with cream sauce and bacon. Luckily I got the recipe and I am going to attempt to make this in the coming month!

In the distance, the sun was setting into a pale pink beyond the hills as we made our way to the family estate of Hernyák, where our gracious host Vali Hernyák gave us a tour of their cellar followed by a fabulous tasting of their wines. The Hernyák estate only produces a limited amount of wine and we’ve created a short video to highlight the best parts of our visit, watch it below:

To continue what Vali was saying at the end of the video, the estate believes in quality over quantity which is just perfect for us. The family’s hospitality and graciousness far exceeded our expectations and we were sorry to have to leave. Vali is also a fantastic baker and we chowed down on these savory pogácsa rolls while we chatted. I also got the recipe so I’ll be sharing it soon!
If you look closely at the photo below, the words spell out the name of the estate using objects close to the family’s heart. Loved this idea.
